I am going to pick up a 1970 toyota hilux with a 75 18r. I want to know if i can slap a 5 speed on it with no adapter. What was the tranny on the 20r that was on the SR-5s in 73-75? Will it work?

toyota started the 20r in 1975. an easy way to tell is the 18r has the intake and exhaust on the same side of the head. i have one in my 73, and they are considered boat anchors. they are really better than the stock 8r your truck would have had, but they are heavy compared to the 20/22r.
on the tranny: if the engine has an R, it's from the R series family, and the bellhousing pattern is the same. 8r/18r/22r/22re/22rte etc.
if i remember correctly the best trannies for the trucks come from the celica cars and late model pickups. the w56 and w58. my 73 has a 4 speed manual, but i have yet to look up what it is.
if you really want a lot of info, i have to recommend you check out www.toyotaminis.com. lots of hilux info, as well as a lot of hilux owners.

I know its an 18r for sure. Its like an 18r-h or something, whatever the japan model was, there are japanese characters all over it. It has a 4 speed but i want a highway gear because its gonna be my daily. By the way, how is everyone? Its been a while! I am also going to run a Sanden sd7 compressor on the truck, so ill do a tech article for the forum if one hasnt already been done.
Ill fill everyone in when i tow the truck home.

if it has an 18r-g (DOHC, japan only) then i'm soooooo jealous!!!
i searched for an 18r-g for quite a while without any luck. so instead i picked up a lexus 1uz-fe. all aluminum v-8!! weighs about the same as the stock 18r, only itstead of 97h.p. it has 256! i can't wait!!
